Gulmarg Travel Guide: How to Reach, When to Go and What to Expect

The meadow of flowers in summer, India's ski capital in winter. How to get to Gulmarg, the best season for you, where to stay and the mistakes to avoid.

Quick answerGulmarg is about 50 km from Srinagar (1.5–2 hours via Tangmarg), at roughly 2,650 m. Visit May–September for green meadows or late December–March for snow and skiing. Ride the Gulmarg Gondola (tickets online only), and stay at least one night if you can, because mornings here are magic.

Gulmarg means "meadow of flowers", which is accurate for about five months of the year. For the other months it is a snow globe. Either way, it is one of the few places in India where the view from your hotel window is better than any photograph you will take of it.

How to reach Gulmarg

  • From Srinagar: about 50 km by road through Tangmarg; 1.5–2 hours. Most visitors come by private cab.
  • From the airport: about 1.5–2 hours; easy to do on arrival day if you land by midday.
  • In snow: the last stretch after Tangmarg can require chains or a local 4x4. Your driver will know; trust him.

Top things to do

  • Gulmarg Gondola: phase 1 to Kongdori, phase 2 to near the top of Apharwat. Read our Gondola guide before booking.
  • Skiing and snowboarding: December to March. See our skiing guide.
  • St Mary's Church: a small stone church from the early 1900s, lovely in snow.
  • Golf course: one of the highest green golf courses in the world.
  • Pony ride to Khilanmarg: a meadow above Gulmarg with wide views in summer.
  • Snow play: sledges are pulled by local sledge-wallahs; agree the price first.

Day trip or overnight?

A day trip from Srinagar works and saves money, because Gulmarg hotels cost more. But staying one night means you are on the first gondola before the day-trippers arrive, and you get Gulmarg at sunset when the crowds have gone. If budget allows, stay.

Practical tips

  • Altitude: take it easy on the first day; phase 2 of the gondola reaches nearly 4,000 m.
  • Cash: carry some for ponies, sledges and tea stalls.
  • Snow gear: boots and coats can be rented in Tangmarg and Gulmarg. Check they fit before you pay.
  • Fixed rates: local associations set rates for ponies and guides. Ask for the official rate card.
