Srinagar in Winter: Chillai Kalan, Harissa Breakfasts and Snow on the Dal

Srinagar's coldest 40 days have their own rituals: pherans, kangris, harissa at dawn and snow on the houseboats. How to enjoy the city from December to February.

Quick answerSrinagar winter runs from December to February; the coldest stretch, Chillai Kalan, lasts about 40 days from 21 December to late January. Expect nights below freezing and occasional snow. Stay somewhere with proper heating, eat harissa for breakfast, and day-trip to Gulmarg for deep snow.

Most visitors see Srinagar in summer, all shikaras and flowers. Winter Srinagar is a different city: quieter, slower, and dressed in pherans. Steam rises from bakery ovens at dawn, the Zabarwan hills turn white, and the lake takes on a pale silver light that photographers dream about.

Chillai Kalan: the 40 coldest days

Kashmiris divide winter into three periods. Chillai Kalan, roughly 21 December to late January, is the harshest: the heaviest snow and lowest temperatures, sometimes cold enough for parts of Dal Lake to freeze at the edges. It is followed by the milder Chillai Khurd and Chillai Bachha. Locals stay warm with the woollen pheran and the kangri, a fire pot held beneath it.

What to do

  • Harissa breakfast: a slow-cooked mutton and rice dish sold from dawn in old-city shops in winter only. Eat it hot with fresh bread.
  • Snowy shikara ride: on a clear day after snowfall, the lake and mountains are spectacular.
  • Old city walk: fewer crowds and snow on the wooden shrines. See our old city walk.
  • Gulmarg day trip: skiing, sledging or simply standing in deep snow. About 2 hours each way in winter conditions.

Staying warm

  • Choose a hotel with central heating or good room heaters; ask before booking.
  • Houseboats can be magical in winter, but only book one with reliable heating and hot water.
  • Pack thermals, a down jacket, warm socks, gloves and a woollen cap.

Travel notes

  • Flights can be delayed by fog or snow; keep a buffer day before onward connections.
  • The Jammu–Srinagar highway can close after heavy snow; check advisories.
  • Power cuts happen in heavy snow; good hotels have generators.

  • Houseboat Stay in Winter: A snowy night on a Srinagar houseboat is unforgettable if the boat is warm.
  • The Kashmiri Hamam: Long before radiators, Kashmir warmed its mosques and homes with the hamam, a stone floor heated by fire from below.
  • Harissa: Slow-cooked overnight and sold from dawn in old Srinagar's shops, harissa is Kashmir's most beloved winter dish.
  • Bird Watching in Kashmir: Migratory ducks and geese in winter, kingfishers on the Dal and Himalayan birds in the forests.
