Quick answerA hamam is a Kashmiri room with a floor of thick stone slabs laid over a hollow space, heated by a wood fire lit in an outside firebox. The heat spreads under the floor and the stone stays warm for hours. Hamams were long found in mosques and wealthier homes, and are making a comeback because they work even during power cuts.
On a January morning, the warmest place in many Kashmiri homes is the hamam. Families sit on the warm stone floor with noon chai, children do homework on it and grandparents doze. It is underfloor heating, centuries before the phrase existed.
How a hamam works
- Thick stone slabs, often limestone, are laid on brick or slate supports, leaving a hollow space below.
- A wood fire is lit in a firebox outside the room.
- Hot air and smoke travel under the slabs and out through a flue.
- The stone absorbs the heat and releases it slowly, keeping the room warm long after the fire dies.
Some hamams also heat a copper water tank above the firebox.
History
- Accounts differ, but the hamam is often linked to Mughal and earlier Central Asian influences.
- For centuries, hamams were common in mosques, where worshippers warmed up before prayer.
- Wealthier homes added them; electric heaters later replaced many.
The modern comeback
Winter power cuts have brought the hamam back. Many new homes include one, and electric hamams have appeared too, though traditional wood-fired versions remain popular for their steady warmth.
Can visitors experience one?
Some homestays and heritage properties have hamams; ask when booking. Never block the flue, and follow your host's guidance. Pair it with our guides to the kangri, the pheran and Chillai Kalan.
