Quick answerKashmir has three main golf courses: Gulmarg Golf Course, often described as one of the highest green golf courses in the world; Royal Springs Golf Course in Srinagar, beside Dal Lake and the Zabarwan hills; and a course in Pahalgam. The season runs from spring to autumn. Book tee times and check green fees locally, as they change.

Golf in Kashmir is less about your handicap and more about not being distracted by the view. Try concentrating on a putt with snow-capped peaks behind the flag. Your scorecard may suffer; your camera roll will not.

Gulmarg Golf Course

  • Setting: on the meadow at around 2,650 m, surrounded by pine forest.
  • History: golf has been played in Gulmarg since the colonial era.
  • Season: spring to autumn; the course is under snow in winter.
  • Good to know: pair a round with the Gondola. See Gulmarg in summer.

Royal Springs Golf Course, Srinagar

  • Setting: on the slopes of the Zabarwan range, overlooking Dal Lake.
  • Layout: an 18-hole course known for its landscaping and views.
  • Good to know: close to the Mughal gardens, so you can combine golf with sightseeing.

Pahalgam

Pahalgam also has a golf course in the valley beside the Lidder. Check with the Pahalgam Development Authority or your hotel whether it is open and taking visitors during your dates.

Booking, fees and gear

  • Green fees differ for members, Indian visitors and foreign visitors; ask the club for current rates.
  • Book a tee time a day or two ahead in peak season.
  • Clubs and caddies can usually be arranged on site; confirm when booking.
  • Bring sun protection; the sun is strong at altitude.
