Quick answerYes, partly. During severe cold waves, usually in late December or January, a sheet of ice forms over parts of Dal Lake, especially the interior and edges. A complete freeze is rare: the famous one was in 1965, when a jeep was reportedly driven across. Never walk on the ice; it is thin and unpredictable.
There are few sights as surreal as a shikara pushing through ice on Dal Lake, its boatman breaking a path with his paddle. It happens in the coldest spells of Chillai Kalan, and photos travel across India within hours.
When Dal Lake freezes
- When night temperatures fall several degrees below freezing for a few days running.
- Most often in late December and January. See Chillai Kalan.
- Usually a thin layer on calmer parts of the lake that melts during the day.
Record cold
- Srinagar's lowest recorded temperature is reported as -14.4°C, from 1893.
- In recent decades, nights of around -8°C have been reported as the coldest in about 30 years, with the lake partly frozen.
- The best-known full freeze was in 1965.
Seeing it safely
- Never walk or stand on the ice, however solid it looks.
- View from Boulevard Road or a houseboat veranda.
- Shikara rides may still run where boatmen can break through; follow their judgment.
- Early morning is best for photos. See winter photo spots.
