Quick answerA shikara ride on Dal Lake usually lasts 1–3 hours. Board from the numbered ghats on Boulevard Road, check the official rate board, and agree the route and time before you set off. Sunset is the most beautiful time; dawn is the time for the floating market.
A shikara is the long, canopied wooden boat that has carried people across Dal Lake for centuries. A ride is the single most iconic thing to do in Srinagar, and it is calm enough for children and older travellers.
Popular shikara routes
| Duration | Route |
|---|---|
| 1 hour | Boulevard ghats, houseboat lines, Nehru Park area |
| 2 hours | Adds Char Chinar island and the floating gardens |
| 3+ hours | Adds the Meena Bazaar water market, old canals and Nigeen Lake side |
How prices work
The tourism department publishes rates for shikara rides, displayed at the ghats. Prices are per boat (usually up to four people), not per person, and depend on the duration and route. Confirm the price, duration and stops with the shikara owner before boarding.
Tip: Vendors in smaller boats will paddle up selling saffron, jewellery and snacks. A polite "no thank you" is enough if you are not interested.
Best time of day
- Dawn (about 5:30 am in summer): the floating vegetable market near Gudri, mist on the water.
- Late afternoon to sunset: golden light on the Zabarwan hills, the most popular time.
- Midday: quieter but hotter in summer; good for photos of the houseboats.
What you will see
- Rows of carved houseboats with names like palaces.
- Char Chinar, a tiny island with chinar trees.
- The floating gardens, where vegetables grow on matted reeds.
- Kingfishers, lotus beds in summer and views of Hari Parbat fort.
Combine it with a houseboat stay
Houseboat owners can arrange a shikara for you, and many stays include a transfer by shikara. Read our houseboat guide and our list of things to do in Srinagar.
