Quick answerChillai Kalan is the 40-day period of Kashmir's harshest winter, from 21 December to about 30 January. It is followed by Chillai Khurd (the "small cold", about 20 days) and Chillai Bachha (the "baby cold", about 10 days). It brings the coldest nights, the most snowfall and frozen water pipes, plus the year's best harissa.
Kashmiris have a name for the coldest stretch of winter, and they say it with a mix of respect and affection. Chillai Kalan, from the Persian for "great cold", is when life slows, kangris glow under pherans and conversations revolve around the snow.
The three periods of winter
| Period | Roughly | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Chillai Kalan | 21 Dec to about 30 Jan | The coldest 40 days, most snow |
| Chillai Khurd | About 31 Jan to 19 Feb | The "small cold", still freezing |
| Chillai Bachha | About 20 Feb to 1 Mar | The "baby cold", winter easing |
What daily life looks like
- Warmth: pherans and kangris, and in many homes a hamam heated room. See our kangri and pheran guides.
- Food: harissa at dawn, dried vegetables stored since autumn and endless noon chai. See the winter food guide.
- Frozen pipes: taps can freeze overnight in older buildings.
- Shorter days: markets close earlier in the evening.
What it means for travellers
- The best time for snow and skiing, but also the coldest.
- Choose hotels with reliable heating and backup power.
- Allow extra time for roads and flights after heavy snow. See winter roads and flights.
- Never use a coal or wood heater in a closed room without ventilation; carbon monoxide is a real winter danger.
