Quick answerPahalgam usually has snow from December to February, with sub-zero nights. Roads from Srinagar stay open in most weather but may need chains after heavy snow. Aru and Betaab are reachable by union taxi when roads are clear; Chandanwari and Baisaran remain on the district closure list. Book a heated hotel by the river.
Summer Pahalgam is green and busy. Winter Pahalgam is white and hushed, with snow piled on the pines and the Lidder running dark between icy banks. For travellers who want snow without Gulmarg's crowds, it is a lovely choice.
What to expect
- Snow: usually from December, deepest in January and February.
- Temperatures: daytime around freezing; nights well below.
- Crowds: far fewer than in summer.
- Some businesses close for winter; book your hotel ahead.
Getting there in winter
The 95 km drive from Srinagar normally takes 2.5–3 hours, longer after snowfall. Hire a driver experienced with snow chains, and keep a flexible day in case of fresh snow.
