Quick answerFebruary is often the best month for snow in Kashmir: deep snow cover in Gulmarg, Pahalgam and Sonamarg, but slightly milder than January, with Srinagar days around 7–11°C. Gulmarg has hosted the Khelo India Winter Games in February. Chillai Kalan ends around 31 January, so the harshest cold is usually over.

If January is winter at full volume, February is winter with the bass turned down a notch. Snow is usually deep, skies clear more often and the days stretch a little. Many ski instructors in Gulmarg will tell you, between runs, that this is their favourite month.

Why February works

  • Snow depth: after December and January snowfall, cover is usually at its deepest.
  • Skiing: peak season in Gulmarg. See skiing in Gulmarg.
  • Events: the Gulmarg leg of the Khelo India Winter Games was held from 23 to 26 February 2026. See our Khelo India guide.
  • Chillai Khurd: the milder "small cold" follows Chillai Kalan. See Chillai Kalan explained.

Things to watch

  • Avalanche advisories for higher slopes after heavy snow; follow local guidance.
  • Fresh snowfall can still close the Jammu–Srinagar highway and delay flights.
  • Gondola phase 2 closes in high wind. See the Gondola in winter.

A 5-day February plan

  1. Arrive Srinagar.
  2. Gulmarg overnight: Gondola, skiing or sledging.
  3. Gulmarg morning, return to Srinagar.
  4. Pahalgam day trip in the snow.
  5. Old city morning and fly home.
