Quick answerThe best time to visit Kashmir for most travellers is April to June (pleasant 15–25°C days, gardens in bloom, every road open) and September to October (clear skies and golden chinar trees). Come in December to February if you want snow and skiing in Gulmarg.

Kashmir has four clear seasons, and each one changes the valley completely. The right month depends on what you want to see: tulips, green meadows, autumn colour or snow. This guide walks through the year so you can match the month to your trip.

Spring: March to May

Spring is when Kashmir wakes up. Almond orchards around Srinagar flower in March, and the Indira Gandhi Memorial Tulip Garden usually opens in late March or early April for about three to four weeks. Days are mild, mornings are crisp, and Gulmarg still holds snow at the top of the gondola into April.

  • March: cool and sometimes rainy; snow is still possible in Gulmarg and Pahalgam.
  • April: tulip season and the start of the main tourist season. Book hotels early.
  • May: warm, green and fully open. One of the most comfortable months for first-time visitors.

Summer: June to August

Summer is peak season for families escaping the heat of the plains. Srinagar can touch 30°C or more in July, but Gulmarg, Pahalgam and Sonamarg stay pleasant. The meadows are at their greenest, and high-altitude treks such as the Kashmir Great Lakes open in July.

The Amarnath Yatra runs in July and August. Pahalgam and Sonamarg (the two base camps) get busy, and there can be traffic restrictions on yatra days, so build a little slack into your plan.

Autumn: September to November

Autumn is the season many locals say is the most beautiful. The chinar trees in Srinagar's Mughal gardens and along Dal Lake turn red and gold from late October into November. Skies are clear, crowds thin out after September, and hotel rates usually drop.

Tip: Nights get cold from October. Carry a warm jacket even if the afternoon feels like summer.

Winter: December to February

Winter brings snow to Gulmarg, Pahalgam and Sonamarg, and sometimes to Srinagar itself. Gulmarg becomes one of Asia's best-known ski resorts. The coldest stretch, called Chillai Kalan, runs from 21 December to 31 January, when lakes can freeze at the edges and night temperatures drop well below zero.

Some roads close in heavy snow, and higher passes stay shut until spring. Plan a flexible itinerary and stay in hotels with proper heating.

Which month should you choose?

  • Honeymoon: April–June for flowers, or January–February for snow.
  • Family with children: May–June or September, when every place is open and weather is gentle.
  • Skiing: mid-December to March in Gulmarg.
  • Photography: late October to mid-November for autumn colours.
  • Budget trip: November or early March, when prices are lowest.

Plan the rest of your Kashmir trip

  • Kashmir in December: December brings the start of Chillai Kalan, the first proper snow in Gulmarg in many years and the busiest week of the winter around Christmas and New Year.
  • Kashmir in January: January is the coldest, snowiest month in Kashmir: the best time for skiing and snow play in Gulmarg, frosty Srinagar mornings and a real taste of Chillai Kalan.
  • Kashmir in February: February often has Kashmir's deepest snow, brighter days than January and winter sports events in Gulmarg.
  • Festivals of Kashmir: Religious festivals, shrine celebrations and seasonal events across the year.
  • Gurez Valley in 2026: One of Kashmir's most beautiful and remote valleys, close to the Line of Control.

Frequently asked questions

Which is the cheapest month to visit Kashmir?

November and early March are usually the cheapest. Hotels discount rooms between the autumn and winter seasons, and flights to Srinagar are easier to find.

When does it snow in Kashmir?

Gulmarg and Pahalgam usually get regular snow from December to February, and Gulmarg often keeps snow until March or April. Srinagar gets occasional snowfall in December and January.

Is Kashmir good in the monsoon?

Yes. Kashmir sits behind the Pir Panjal range, so it gets far less monsoon rain than the rest of India. July and August are warm in Srinagar and pleasant in the hill stations.

When is the Tulip Garden open?

The Tulip Garden in Srinagar usually opens in late March or early April and stays open for about three to four weeks, depending on the weather that year.
