Quick answerSrinagar's floating vegetable market happens on Dal Lake very early in the morning, roughly from first light until soon after sunrise. Farmers from the lake's floating gardens trade vegetables from boat to boat. Book a shikara the night before, leave around dawn, and remember it is a working wholesale market, not a show.
The floating market is one of the few Kashmir experiences that needs an alarm clock. It rewards you, though: mist on the water, the murmur of bargaining, boats piled with greens, and the first sunlight catching the Zabarwan hills. By the time most visitors reach breakfast, it has already dispersed.
What it is
Families who farm Dal Lake's floating gardens, called raad, paddle out at dawn to sell vegetables such as collard greens (haak), tomatoes, cucumbers and lotus stems (nadru) to traders, who take them to markets across the city. Watching it is a window into a way of life that has existed on the lake for generations.
How to visit
- Book a shikara the evening before through your houseboat or hotel, and agree the price and pick-up time.
- Leave at first light. The market winds down soon after sunrise.
- Dress warmly: dawn on the lake is cold, even in summer.
- Combine the ride with a loop past the floating gardens and a kahwa stop on the way back.
Etiquette
- Ask before photographing people up close.
- Keep your shikara out of the way of trading boats.
- Buy something small if you like; it is a wholesale market, so traders may prefer larger sales.
Best season
From spring to autumn, when the floating gardens are productive. Late spring and summer bring the greatest variety of vegetables.
