Quick answerAs of our latest check, Pahalgam town, the Lidder riverside, Aru Valley and Betaab Valley are open. The Anantnag district's closure list dated 7 July 2026 includes Chandanwari and Baisaran, with an end date of 31 December 2026. Plan two nights around Aru, Betaab and the river, and confirm the latest status before you travel.
Since the April 2025 attack in Baisaran, several sites around Pahalgam have opened and closed in phases. Many older itineraries online still include places that are shut. This page sticks to what the official sources say, so you do not discover a closed checkpoint at the end of a long drive.
Status at a glance
| Place | Status | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Pahalgam town, market and riverside | Open | Not on the district closure list |
| Aru Valley | Open | Not on the district closure list |
| Betaab Valley | Open | Reopened in an earlier phase; not on the current list |
| Chandanwari | Closed to tourists | Anantnag district list, 7 July 2026, end date 31 December 2026 |
| Baisaran | Closed to tourists | Anantnag district list, 7 July 2026, end date 31 December 2026 |
The same district list also includes Daksum, Sinthan Top, Margan Top, Apple Valley Srigufwara, Chatabal Shangus and Tulian Lake. Chandanwari had reopened briefly in spring 2026 before appearing on the July list, and it is also the starting point of the Amarnath Yatra, so its status can change. Always check with your operator or the district administration.
A great two days without the closed spots
Day 1: Arrive and walk
Drive in from Srinagar via the saffron fields and Avantipora. In the afternoon, walk along the Lidder, visit the ancient Mamleshwar temple near town, and settle in for a riverside evening.
Day 2: Aru and Betaab
Hire a union taxi in the morning. Aru Valley is a wide meadow with a village and walking paths; Betaab Valley is a green bowl with the river running through it, named after the 1983 film shot there. Back by afternoon for a slow last evening.
Practical notes
- Be wary of anyone selling Baisaran or Chandanwari rides while they are on the closure list.
- Union taxi and pony rates are set by local associations; ask for the rate card.
- Carry ID; there are checkpoints on some roads.
