Quick answerThe Indira Gandhi Memorial Tulip Garden in Srinagar usually opens in late March or early April and stays open for about three to four weeks, until the blooms fade. It has well over a million tulips in many varieties. Visit early in the morning on a weekday to avoid crowds.

Each spring the slopes below the Zabarwan hills turn into rows of red, yellow, pink, purple and white tulips. The garden, overlooking Dal Lake, is often described as Asia's largest tulip garden and has become one of Kashmir's biggest spring attractions.

When does it open?

The exact opening date depends on the weather that year and is announced by the floriculture department a few weeks ahead. Peak bloom usually lasts about two weeks within the opening period. If your dates are flexible, aim for the first half of April.

Tickets and timings

  • Tickets are sold at the gate and are inexpensive.
  • The garden is usually open from morning until early evening.
  • Weekends and holidays are very crowded; weekday mornings are best.

Tips for a good visit

  • Arrive soon after opening for soft light and fewer people.
  • Wear comfortable shoes; the garden is terraced.
  • Don't pick flowers or step into the beds.
  • Carry a light jacket; spring mornings are cool.

What to see nearby

The Tulip Garden sits next to the Botanical Garden and close to Cheshma Shahi and Nishat Bagh, so you can combine them in one morning. See our Mughal gardens guide. The Tulip Festival is held during the bloom, with cultural programmes and handicraft stalls.
