Quick answerSrinagar's lakes host kayaking, canoeing and rowing, and Dal Lake has hosted national water sports festivals. For visitors, the easiest options are a shikara ride and, where available, kayaking on Dal or Nigeen with local operators. Availability varies, so check on arrival, and always wear a life jacket.

Dal Lake is famous for gliding shikaras, but it is also where Kashmir's young athletes train in kayaks and canoes. Watching them cut through the water at dawn is a sight in itself, and if you fancy a paddle, there are ways to join in.

What is on the water

  • Shikara rides: the classic, relaxed option. See the shikara ride guide.
  • Kayaking and canoeing: offered by some local operators and clubs, especially in summer.
  • Competitive events: Dal has hosted national water sports festivals with kayaking, canoeing and rowing races.
  • Calmer water: Nigeen Lake is quieter and pleasant for paddling.

What visitors can book

Tourist rentals are less organised than in beach destinations. We have not been able to confirm a fixed, year-round tourist rental service, so treat kayaking as a "check when you arrive" activity. Your houseboat or hotel can usually point you to someone reliable.

Best season

  • May to September: warm days and calm mornings.
  • Early morning: the calmest water and fewer boats.
  • Winter: the lake is very cold, and parts can freeze in a hard winter.

Safety

  • Always wear a life jacket.
  • Stay within the area your operator shows you; parts of the lake have weeds and busy boat lanes.
  • Avoid paddling in strong wind or after dark.
  • Carry your phone in a waterproof pouch.

Make it part of your Srinagar stay

Pair a morning paddle with the floating market and a houseboat night. Ask our team through Get My Travel Plan, or see the 3 nights 4 days package.
