The Jammu–Srinagar stretch takes 6–8 hours depending on traffic and weather. Leave early, and avoid driving the mountain section after dark.
Rules worth knowing before you drive
- Union taxis: in Pahalgam and Sonamarg, outside vehicles stop at the town; local union taxis take you to Aru, Betaab and Thajiwas.
- Winter: the highway can close for snow or landslides. Check the J&K traffic advisory every evening.
- Documents: carry RC, insurance, licence and ID; there are checkpoints.
- Gulmarg in snow: chains or a local 4x4 may be required beyond Tangmarg.
When to fly instead
If you have four nights or fewer, fly from Amritsar (direct flights operate) or drive to Jammu and take a short flight. The road trip makes sense for 6 nights or more.
