Quick answerKashmir has brown and rainbow trout in streams such as the Lidder (Pahalgam) and Sindh (Sonamarg). You need a fishing licence from the J&K Fisheries Department, which allots specific stretches called beats. The season runs roughly from spring to autumn. Non-anglers can visit the trout farm at Kokernag.

Trout were introduced to Kashmir in the early 20th century, and the cold, clear streams suited them so well that the valley became one of the finest trout destinations in Asia. Today, angling is carefully managed through licences and beats, which keeps the rivers healthy and the experience peaceful.

Where to fish

  • Lidder, Pahalgam: the classic trout river, with beats along its course.
  • Sindh, Sonamarg and Kangan: glacier-fed water with good fishing.
  • Other streams: the Fisheries Department lists more beats across the valley; some, such as Daksum, are on the district closure list dated 7 July 2026 (end date 31 December 2026).

How the licence works

  • Apply to the J&K Fisheries Department for a licence for a specific beat and date.
  • Fees and rules (bag limits, permitted methods) are set by the department; ask for the current rules when you apply.
  • Some beats are fly-fishing only.
  • Fishing without a licence is not allowed.

When to go

The season usually runs from spring to autumn, with closed periods for breeding. Early mornings and evenings are best. Snowmelt can make rivers high and murky in late spring.

Not an angler?

Visit the government trout farm at Kokernag to see trout being reared, and try fresh trout at restaurants in Pahalgam and Srinagar.

What to bring

  • Your own rod and flies, or arrange gear through your operator.
  • Waders or sturdy waterproof boots.
  • Warm layers; mountain water and mornings are cold. See our packing list.
