Quick answerJanuary is Kashmir's coldest month and the heart of Chillai Kalan. Srinagar days are usually 4–8°C and nights well below freezing. It is one of the best months for snow in Gulmarg, Pahalgam and Sonamarg and for skiing. Heavy snow can delay flights and close roads for a day or more, so build in a buffer.

January is Kashmir at its most dramatic: houseboats rimmed with ice, chinar branches traced in snow and steam rising from every samovar. It is also the month that tests your packing. Get the layers right and it is magical; get them wrong and you will be buying a pheran on day one (which, to be fair, is also a great idea).

Weather in January

PlaceTypical daysTypical nights
Srinagar4–8°C-5 to -1°C
Gulmarg-2 to 3°C-12 to -6°C
Pahalgam1–6°C-8 to -3°C
Sonamarg-3 to 2°C-14 to -7°C

Typical ranges only; cold waves can push Srinagar far lower.

Why come in January

What to expect

  • Short days: sunset is around 5:30 pm.
  • Power cuts can happen; good hotels have backup heating.
  • Roads to Gulmarg may need chains or 4x4 vehicles after heavy snow.
  • Flights can be grounded by snow or low visibility. Read winter roads and flights.

A 5-day January plan

  1. Arrive Srinagar; heated hotel or houseboat.
  2. Gulmarg: Gondola, sledging or a beginner ski lesson; stay overnight.
  3. Gulmarg morning, back to Srinagar.
  4. Sonamarg or Pahalgam day trip, depending on roads.
  5. Harissa breakfast and fly home with a buffer.

  • Does Dal Lake Freeze?: Dal Lake freezes partly in hard cold spells, and fully only in rare historic winters.
  • Kashmir in February: February often has Kashmir's deepest snow, brighter days than January and winter sports events in Gulmarg.
