Quick answerGurez is about 120–125 km from Srinagar (6–7 hours) via Bandipora and the Razdan Pass (about 3,300 m). In February 2026, the Lieutenant Governor said Gurez would reopen once snow was cleared, but we have not found an official confirmation that it has reopened. The road usually closes with heavy snow from around November. Check with the Bandipora district administration before planning.

Gurez is the valley that photographers whisper about: wooden villages, the Kishanganga river and the pyramid of Habba Khatoon peak. It is also close to the Line of Control, which is why access depends on security reviews as much as on snow. This guide tells you what is known, and what is not.

Status in 2026

  • Gurez was among destinations closed after the April 2025 Pahalgam attack, and the police advised tourists to avoid the route in mid-2025.
  • In February 2026, the Lieutenant Governor ordered 14 destinations reopened and said Gurez, Athwatoo and Bangus would reopen once snow was cleared from approach roads.
  • We found no later official notice confirming that Gurez reopened to tourists. Ask the Bandipora district administration or a licensed local operator for the current position.

The route (when open)

StageNotes
Srinagar to BandiporaAbout 1.5–2 hours along Wular Lake
Bandipora to Razdan PassSteep mountain road with checkpoints, including Tragbal
Razdan Pass to DawarDescent into the Gurez valley; total 6–7 hours from Srinagar

Start early, avoid driving the mountain section after dark, and carry original ID plus photocopies. Travellers register at several checkpoints.

Permits

  • Indian nationals: most sources say no special permit is needed for the main valley, but registration at checkpoints is required. Going beyond Tulail towards Chakwali needs separate clearance.
  • Foreign nationals: sources conflict; some say a permit through the Deputy Commissioner's office in Bandipora is required. Confirm well in advance.

Season

Roughly May to October. Snow can close Razdan Pass with little warning from late October or November, and the valley is cut off by road for much of winter.

What makes Gurez special

  • Habba Khatoon peak: named after the 16th-century Kashmiri poet-queen.
  • Dawar: the main town, with log houses and the Kishanganga river.
  • Dard-Shina culture: a distinct language and way of life from the rest of the valley.
  • Tulail valley: further along, with traditional villages.
