Quick answerA 3 nights 4 days Kashmir trip works best with all three nights in Srinagar (one on a Dal Lake houseboat) and one full-day trip to Gulmarg (about 50 km, 1.5–2 hours each way). Typical cost: ₹8,000–12,000 per person on a budget, ₹13,000–22,000 mid-range, excluding flights.

Three nights in Kashmir is like being handed one spoonful of a very good dessert: you will want more, but that one spoonful can still be wonderful. The mistake most short-trip travellers make is trying to eat the whole menu. They check in and out of four hotels, spend more time looking at the back of the driver's seat than at the mountains, and fly home needing another holiday.

The fix is simple. Stay in one place, unpack once, and take day trips. Srinagar is the natural base: it has the airport, the railway station, Dal Lake, the Mughal gardens and roads leading out to every famous valley.

Who a 3-night package suits

  • Long-weekend travellers from cities with direct flights to Srinagar, such as Delhi, where the flight is about 1 hour 30 minutes.
  • Travellers already in the north, for example in Jammu, Katra or Amritsar, who can add Kashmir without a long journey.
  • Second-time visitors who want a slow lake break, not another sightseeing marathon.
  • Anyone testing Kashmir before planning a longer family trip or honeymoon.

If this is your first Kashmir trip and you can find even one more night, a 4 nights 5 days plan is noticeably more relaxed.

The 3 nights 4 days plan

DayPlanOvernight
1Arrive Srinagar, check in to a houseboat, sunset shikara ride on Dal LakeHouseboat, Srinagar
2Full-day trip to Gulmarg: Gulmarg Gondola, meadows or snow, back by eveningHotel, Srinagar
3Mughal gardens, Shankaracharya Temple, old city and a wazwan dinnerHotel, Srinagar
4Early shikara ride or shopping, transfer to the airport-

Day 1: Arrive and float

Srinagar airport is about 30–45 minutes from Dal Lake. Check in to your houseboat, drink your first cup of kahwa on the front deck and let the lake slow you down. In the late afternoon, take a shikara past the floating gardens and Char Chinar. Our shikara ride guide explains routes and how rates work, and the houseboat guide helps you choose a good boat.

Day 2: Gulmarg day trip

Leave by 8 am. The 50 km drive takes about 1.5–2 hours. Gulmarg Gondola tickets are sold online only, and phase 1 must be booked before phase 2, so book them a few days ahead in season. In 2026, published fares were roughly ₹750–850 for phase 1 and ₹950–1,050 for phase 2 per person; check the official J&K Cable Car Corporation site for the current price. In summer you get green meadows; from late December you usually get snow.

Swap option: prefer rivers to snow? Do a Pahalgam day instead (about 95 km, 2.5–3 hours each way). It is a longer day, so leave by 7 am. Note that in Pahalgam, Aru and Betaab valleys are open, but Chandanwari and Baisaran are on the district's closure list dated 7 July 2026 (end date 31 December 2026).

Day 3: Srinagar at your own pace

Morning at Nishat Bagh and Shalimar Bagh, a climb to the Shankaracharya Temple for the view, then the old city: Jamia Masjid, Khanqah-e-Moula and the lanes around them. End with a proper wazwan dinner. Our Mughal gardens guide and old city walk cover timings and tips.

Day 4: One last look at the lake

If your flight is after noon, take a sunrise shikara to see the floating vegetable market, then head to the airport. Leave at least two hours for airport security, which is thorough in Srinagar.

What you skip in 3 nights (honestly)

A good short package is as much about what you leave out as what you keep. In three nights you will not sleep in Pahalgam or Gulmarg, and Sonamarg is usually out unless you swap it for the Gulmarg day. That is fine. A trip with one great day trip and two calm lake days is better than four rushed ones.

What a 3 nights 4 days package costs

StyleStayPer person (excluding flights)
BudgetStandard houseboat + 2–3 star hotel₹8,000–12,000
Mid-rangeDeluxe houseboat + 3–4 star hotel₹13,000–22,000
LuxuryLuxury houseboat + 5-star hotel₹28,000 and up

Prices assume two people sharing a room, breakfast and dinner, and a private sedan for transfers and sightseeing. Gondola tickets, pony rides and Pahalgam union taxis are extra. April–June and the Christmas–New Year week cost more. For a fuller breakdown, see our Kashmir trip cost guide.

Best time for a short Kashmir break

  • March–April: almond blossom and the tulip garden (usually late March to mid-April).
  • May–June: long, pleasant days; busiest and most expensive.
  • October–November: golden chinar leaves, clear skies and fewer crowds. Excellent value.
  • January–February: snow in Gulmarg; Srinagar is cold but beautiful. Choose heated rooms.

Tip: On a short trip, book the earliest flight in and an afternoon flight out. Those few extra hours are the difference between three days and three-and-a-half days in Kashmir.

Frequently asked questions

Is 3 nights enough for Kashmir?

Yes, for Srinagar and one day trip to Gulmarg or Pahalgam. It is not enough to stay in every valley, so base yourself in Srinagar and avoid changing hotels every night.

Gulmarg or Pahalgam on a 3-night trip?

Gulmarg is closer (about 1.5–2 hours from Srinagar) and has the gondola and snow. Pahalgam is about 2.5–3 hours away and is best for rivers and valleys. For a short trip, Gulmarg is easier.

How much does a 3 nights 4 days Kashmir package cost?

About ₹8,000–12,000 per person on a budget and ₹13,000–22,000 mid-range, excluding flights, for two people sharing a room with breakfast and dinner.

Should I stay on a houseboat for all three nights?

One or two nights is ideal. Many travellers enjoy one houseboat night for the experience and a hotel for the rest, especially in winter.
