Quick answerDress in three layers: thermal base layer, a fleece or wool middle layer and a windproof, waterproof jacket. Add waterproof boots with grip, gloves, a woollen cap, warm socks and sunglasses. Snow coats and boots can be rented in Tangmarg and Gulmarg. Buy a pheran in Srinagar for evenings.
The most common winter mistake we see is travellers from warm cities packing their one big jacket and a pair of canvas shoes. Snow soaks canvas in minutes. Here is how to dress so you spend your trip throwing snowballs rather than counting toes.
The three-layer system
| Layer | What | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Base | Thermal top and leggings | Keeps warmth close and wicks sweat |
| Middle | Fleece, wool sweater or light down | Traps heat |
| Outer | Windproof, waterproof jacket and trousers | Keeps snow and wind out |
Feet, hands and head
- Boots: waterproof with a good grip. Gumboots and snow boots are rented near the Gulmarg road.
- Socks: wool or thermal, plus a spare dry pair.
- Gloves: waterproof gloves for snow; thin liners for phone use.
- Head: woollen cap that covers the ears, and a scarf or neck warmer.
- Eyes: sunglasses; snow glare is strong.
What to rent, what to buy
- Rent: long snow coats, snow trousers and boots at Tangmarg or Gulmarg for a day of snow play. Agree the price and check the fit.
- Buy: a pheran in Srinagar for evenings, and woollen socks and caps in local markets.
- Ski gear: rented from ski shops in Gulmarg. See learning to ski.
