Quick answerDecember is properly cold: Srinagar days around 6–10°C and nights below freezing. Gulmarg often has snow by mid to late December, but some years start dry. Chillai Kalan, the harshest 40 days of winter, begins on 21 December. The Christmas to New Year week is the busiest and most expensive of the winter, so book early.
December is when Kashmir switches fully into winter mode. Kangris come out, harissa shops open before dawn and Gulmarg's ski shops dust off their rental racks. For travellers it is a month of two halves: a calm, good-value first fortnight and a festive, packed final week.
