Quick answerPopular pony rides include Gulmarg towards Khilanmarg and around the meadow, and Sonamarg to Thajiwas Glacier. In Pahalgam, the classic ride to Baisaran is on the district closure list dated 7 July 2026 (end date 31 December 2026), so do not book it. Rates are fixed by local pony associations; ask for the rate card and agree the route first.

For many visitors, a pony ride is the most memorable part of a Kashmir trip: the creak of the saddle, the pony who clearly knows the route better than you, and the pony man who tells you the same joke he has told for twenty years. It still works.

How rates work

  • Local pony associations fix rates for standard routes; ask to see the rate card.
  • Agree the route, duration and whether waiting time is included.
  • Pay at the end of the ride.
  • Be wary of anyone offering rides to closed places.

Choosing a good pony

  • Look for ponies that appear healthy, well fed and not overloaded.
  • Avoid riders on visibly lame or exhausted animals.
  • Do not push for speed on steep or icy sections.
  • Riders above the weight limit set by operators should choose another activity.

Safety tips

  • Ask for a helmet, especially for children.
  • Hold the saddle, not the reins, if you are a beginner; let the pony man lead.
  • Lean forward going uphill and back going downhill.
  • Wear closed shoes and avoid loose scarves.

  • Pahalgam in 2026: Visiting Pahalgam this year? A clear, sourced summary of which places are open, which are on the district closure list, and how to plan a great two days anyway.
  • Adventure Activities in Kashmir: Skiing, snowmobiles, sledging, trout fishing, golf, pony rides, kayaking and bird watching, plus an honest note on rafting and trekking this year.
