Quick answerFrom Rajasthan, fly to Srinagar via Delhi or Mumbai (Jaipur, Udaipur and Jodhpur all connect easily), or take a train to Jammu and continue. Go in May–June to escape 45°C summers, or December–February for snow. Plan 6 nights; mid-range land costs are about ₹24,000–42,000 per person.
Going from a Rajasthan summer to Kashmir is the travel equivalent of jumping into a cold pool on a hot day. You leave sand dunes at 45°C and land among pine forests at 25°C. Some visitors from Jodhpur have been known to touch snow for the first time and simply stand there grinning.
Routes
| From | Typical route |
|---|---|

Best time from Rajasthan
- May–June: the great escape from peak summer. Busy, so book early.
- December–February: snow in Gulmarg and Pahalgam; real cold, not desert-night cold.
- October: crisp, clear and quiet.
6-night plan
| Nights | Where |
|---|---|
| 2 | Srinagar (1 houseboat) |
| 1 | Gulmarg |
| 2 | Pahalgam |
| 1 | Srinagar (Sonamarg day trip) |
Food
Vegetarian Marwari and Rajasthani families eat well in Kashmir: rajma, dum aloo, paneer dishes and dal are everywhere. Kashmiri saffron (from Pampore) and dry fruits make better souvenirs than another bandhani dupatta, though we would never say that out loud in Jaipur.
Costs
About ₹14,000–21,000 per person on a budget and ₹24,000–42,000 mid-range for 6 nights, excluding travel to Srinagar. Read the cost guide for a full breakdown.
What to pack
Even in May and June, Kashmir nights can drop to around 10°C, and Gulmarg is colder. Pack a fleece and a light jacket for summer trips, and full winter wear from November to March. Desert travellers often underestimate rain: a compact umbrella or rain jacket is useful in spring.
Tip: Fly into Srinagar in the morning and keep the first afternoon free. A shikara ride at sunset is the best possible welcome after a long day of travel.
