Quick answerBook a deluxe or luxury houseboat for the best experience. Dal Lake is central and lively; Nigeen Lake is quieter and greener. One or two nights is ideal. Expect about ₹4,000–8,000 per night for a deluxe double room with meals.

Houseboats date back to the 19th century, when outsiders were not allowed to own land in Kashmir and built homes on the water instead. Today they are carved cedar-wood floating guesthouses, and a night on one is a highlight of any Kashmir trip.

Houseboat categories

CategoryWhat to expect
Luxury / heritageLarge rooms, fine walnut carving, antiques, attentive service
DeluxeComfortable rooms, attached baths, good food, heating in winter
A / B / C classSimpler rooms and fewer amenities at lower prices

Dal Lake or Nigeen Lake?

  • Dal Lake: close to Boulevard Road, restaurants and shops. Busier, with shikaras passing all day.
  • Nigeen Lake: about 20 minutes north, calmer water, willow trees and mountain views. Better for couples and quiet stays.

What a houseboat stay is like

Most houseboats have a front verandah, a sitting room, a dining room and two to four bedrooms with attached bathrooms. You reach them by shikara. Meals are home-style Kashmiri cooking, often served in the dining room. In winter, good houseboats use central heating, electric blankets or a traditional bukhari stove.

Booking tips

  • Ask for recent photos of the exact room and bathroom.
  • Confirm hot water, heating (in winter) and Wi-Fi.
  • Check whether shikara transfers to the boat are included.
  • Book through a registered owner or a trusted operator.

Tip: Pair one houseboat night with a hotel stay. You get the magic of the lake and the space of a hotel for the rest of the trip.

  • The History of Kashmir's Houseboats: Kashmir's carved cedar houseboats began as a workaround to a land rule and became an icon.
  • Nigeen Lake: Same houseboats, fewer crowds. How Nigeen differs from Dal, choosing a houseboat there, shikara routes between the two lakes and who should stay where.
  • Srinagar in Winter: Srinagar's coldest 40 days have their own rituals: pherans, kangris, harissa at dawn and snow on the houseboats.
  • Kashmir Luxury Tour Package: Heritage houseboats, five-star lake-view hotels, private guides and slow, curated days: what a luxury Kashmir trip looks like and what it costs.
