Quick answerFrom Sikkim, most travellers drive to Bagdogra (about 4–5 hours from Gangtok) and fly via Delhi to Srinagar; check flights from Pakyong too. Plan 7 nights. The Gulmarg Gondola climbs to nearly 4,000 m, and Dal Lake's houseboats are unlike anything at home.
Sikkim has Nathu La, Tsomgo Lake and Gangtok's ropeway, so Sikkimese travellers are hard to impress with mountains. Kashmir's trump cards are its lakes, its gardens and the Gulmarg Gondola, which climbs far higher than any ropeway in Sikkim.
Getting there
- From Gangtok: drive to Bagdogra (about 4–5 hours) and fly via Delhi.
- Pakyong: check current flights; options are limited.
- Book both legs together and allow a buffer for mountain road delays to Bagdogra.
Kashmir compared with home
| Sikkim | Kashmir | |
|---|---|---|
| Cable car | Gangtok ropeway | Gulmarg Gondola to about 3,980 m |
| Lakes | Tsomgo, high-altitude | Dal and Nigeen, with houseboats in the city |
| Gardens | Flower shows and orchids | Mughal terraced gardens, tulips in April |

7-night plan
| Nights | Where |
|---|---|
| 3 | Srinagar (1 houseboat; old city; Sonamarg day trip) |
| 2 | Gulmarg |
| 2 | Pahalgam |
When to go
- October–November: clear skies.
- April: tulips in Srinagar.
- Winter: skiing and snow in Gulmarg.
Costs
About ₹16,000–24,000 per person on a budget and ₹27,000–48,000 mid-range for 7 nights, excluding flights.
Allow for the Bagdogra drive
The road from Gangtok to Bagdogra can be slowed by landslides, especially in the monsoon, so many Sikkimese travellers spend a night in Siliguri before an early flight. Sikkim's high-altitude experience pays off at Gulmarg's phase 2, but even so, give yourself a day in Srinagar before heading up to nearly 4,000 m.
Practical tips
- Allow extra time on the drive to Bagdogra; landslides can slow hill roads.
- Carry ID for checkpoints in Kashmir, as you would on the way to Nathu La.
- Book Gondola tickets online as soon as your Gulmarg date is fixed.
