Quick answerHerath is the Kashmiri Pandit celebration of Shivratri, held in late winter in the month of Phalgun. Its heart is the Vatuk puja, in which a pot of walnuts soaked in water represents Shiva and Parvati; the walnuts are later shared as prasad. In 2027, Shivratri falls on 6 March. It is mostly celebrated at home with family.
For Kashmiri Pandits, Herath is more than a festival: it is memory, family and home. Even families who have lived far from the valley for decades still soak walnuts, clean the house and cook the feast exactly as their grandparents did.
What happens at Herath
- Preparation: homes are cleaned and the festive period begins at the start of Phalgun Krishna Paksha.
- Vatuk puja: a pot (vatuk) filled with water and walnuts is worshipped, representing Shiva, Parvati and their attendants.
- Walnut prasad: after the rituals, the soaked walnuts are distributed to family, friends and neighbours.
- Festive food: traditions vary by family; some prepare fish and meat, others vegetarian feasts.
- Salam: the day after, friends and neighbours, including Muslim neighbours, visit to greet the family.
