Kashmir in Winter for Senior Citizens: A Comfortable Snow Holiday

How older travellers can enjoy Kashmir's snow in comfort: heated stays, gentle itineraries, altitude advice, avoiding icy paths and a relaxed 5-night plan.

Quick answerSeniors can enjoy Kashmir in winter with a slow 5-night plan, well-heated hotel rooms (not only houseboats), short snow outings and Gondola phase 1 rather than phase 2 if you have heart, lung or blood pressure concerns. February and March are milder than January. Check with your doctor before travelling and pack warm, non-slip footwear.

Many of our happiest winter guests are grandparents seeing snow for the first time. With warm rooms, an unhurried pace and a careful driver, a snowy Kashmir is very doable at any age.

Choosing when to go

  • February and March: snow in Gulmarg but milder days. See February and March.
  • January: the coldest month; only with excellent heating.

A relaxed 5-night plan

  1. Arrive Srinagar; rest; short evening shikara.
  2. Mughal gardens by car, lunch, early evening.
  3. Gulmarg day trip: snow views, Gondola phase 1 if comfortable.
  4. Rest morning; old city and shopping by car.
  5. Pahalgam drive for river and snow views, back to Srinagar.
  6. Fly home with wheelchair assistance booked if needed.

Health and comfort

  • Altitude: Gulmarg is about 2,650 m; Gondola phase 2 is much higher. Ask your doctor, and skip phase 2 if in doubt. See the Gondola in winter.
  • Heating: choose hotels with central or reliable room heating and backup power.
  • Ice: mornings can be icy; walk slowly with a stick or a helping arm. See winter safety tips.
  • Medicines: carry extra, plus a doctor's note.

What to pack

Thermals, a warm coat, non-slip waterproof boots, gloves, a woollen cap and a hot water bottle. See what to wear.
